NICE Clinical Knowledge Summaries - update

NICE CKS service provides primary care practitioners with a readily accessible summary of the current evidence base and practical guidance on best practice in respect of over 300 common and/or significant primary care presentations.  The service is regularly updated and new topics added as and when significant new evidence emerges.

Since its launch on 8 April 2013, NICE CKS has updated 50 topics and included four new topics provided by Clarity:

Generalised anxiety disorder
Common mental health problems
Miscarriage and ectopic pregnancy (2 CKS topics which count as one new topic)
Ovarian cancer

The site is experiencing good levels of usage with an average of 146,000 unique visitors per month since launch. The short list of new topics for development in 2014/15 has just been agreed between NICE and Clarity.

Richard Brook has left the building

It is with great regret that we are saying goodbye to Richard Brook. Many of you will have been trained by Rich, may have had searches done by Rich or worked with him on the Map of Medicine. Some may have even been forced to rent his chalet for a week when he can't find anyone else.

Richard is leaving to go and work as a Clinical Librarian in Chichester. We will all miss him and I am sure you will too.

Richard will be a great loss to Worcestershire Health Libraries and has a wealth of experience around health information and knowledge Management. The libraries of Worcestershire and Redditch will not be the same without him. Our lost will be Chichester's gain.

We wish Richard all the best and we know he will be a roaring success down on the South Coast.

Take care Rich and don't be a stranger. From all at Worcestershire Health Libraries.

Changes at NICE

Below is a statement from NICE about recent changes.

On April 1, our name changed to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence, to reflect our new role and responsibilities.

NICE's role is to improve outcomes for people using the NHS and other public health and social care services. We do this by:
  • Producing evidence-based guidance and advice for health, public health and social care practitioners.
  • Developing quality standards and performance metrics for those providing and commissioning health, public health and social care services;
  • Providing a range of information services for commissioners, practitioners and managers across the spectrum of health and social care.
See About NICE on our website for further information.

As a result of these developments  NHS Evidence is now called 'NICE Evidence Services'. NICE Evidence Services aim to help professionals make better and quicker evidence-based decisions and are a suite of services that provide online access to high quality, authoritative evidence and best practice. The services are:
  • Evidence Search – which provides access to a unique index of selected and authoritative health and social care evidence-based information.
  • Healthcare Database Advanced Search (HDAS) – which provides access via a federated search to a set of bibliographic databases purchased by NICE on behalf of the NHS.
  • Clinical Knowledge Summaries (CKS) – which provide primary care practitioners with access to evidence-based guidance on over 300 key conditions presenting in primary care.
  • BNF microsite – which provides open access to BNF content across the UK.
  • UK DUETS – a database of Evidence Uncertainties which provides research funders and researchers, access to the 'known unknowns' in the evidence base.
  • Bulletins, Alerts and Evidence Awareness service – which helps busy professionals keep up to date with important new evidence.

Royal Marsden Manual of Clinical Nursing Procedures 8th edition

The Royal Marsden Manual is now available online for Worcestershire Health & Care Trust staff via NHS Athens.

The manual provides up-to-date, evidence-based clinical skills procedures related to essential aspects of a person's care.  Procedure guidelines are based on an appraisal of the latest research findings and advice from clinical experts.

Please go to www.rmmonline.co.uk, and use the Athens Access link on the first page.  There will be links to the manual from the Health & Care Trust's Clinical Policies intranet page in due course but please use Athens in the meantime.

To create an NHS Athens go to the Quick Links panel on our library website.
